Curved Stairlifts

If your stairs have a turn or corner, or if you have two or more shorter straight staircases connected by a landing, a curved stairlift may be an ideal choice for your residence. Take a look at the following designs of curved staircases to determine if they resemble your own stairs. If they do, you will need a curved stairlift.

Curved stairlifts are pricier than straight stairlifts because of the intricate design required to navigate turns. As curved staircases are less universal in shape than straight ones, you are more likely to need a custom-built rail, which will also be expensive. Curved stairlifts start at around £3,850 but multiple bends and stops will cost extra.

Common curved stairlift brands include:

  • Handicare 4000
  • Stannah 260 {Siena}
  • Platinum Ultimate
  • Otolift Modul-Air
  • Thyssen Flow X / Access BDD Flow X

Straight Stairlifts

If your property has a straight staircase without any turns or corners, a straight stairlift is the best choice. However, in the case of two straight staircases connected by a landing, it may be necessary to consider installing two separate stairlifts.

The designs of straight staircases featured (A-D) can give you an idea of whether you require a straight chair lift.

The starting price of a straight stairlift is around £1,950. Because they have a pretty simple design, straight chair lifts cost less than curved stairlifts. Additional features like a powered hinge or telescopic rail and a powered swivel seat will cost more.

Popular straight stairlift makes and models: • Acorn 130, • Brooks Lincoln, • Handicare 1100/1000, • Platinum Horizon, • Stannah 600 and • Thyssen Homeglide

Outdoor stairlifts

Finding it difficult to climb an external set of stairs? Consider installing an external chair lift. Whether to reach your property unassisted or parts of your garden that bring you joy, an outdoor chair lift can restore your confidence and independence.

The average cost of an outdoor stairlift in the East of England area is around £2,400, depending on your requirements. A curved set of steps will cost more.

Outdoor stairlifts are similar to indoor stairlifts, but include waterproof components to make them more weather resistant. When you aren't using your outdoor chair lift, a cover can provide extra shielding from nasty weather.

If your home is by the coast, your outdoor stairlift is more likely to suffer environmental damage. Salt in the air can corrode parts of the stairlift over the years.

Narrow Stairlifts

If your stairs are particularly narrow, you can get a stairlift designed especially for tight spaces. Collapsible parts and compact designs mean your stairlift can be minimal in size and fold out of the way when not in use.
An option for the narrowest of staircases is the Thyssenkrupp Flow X. This stairlift works on both curved or straight staircases. The Flow X stairlift is designed to work on stairs as narrow as 610mm. The carriage automatically turns to get the passenger through the narrowest sections on your staircase without hitting anything.
The other option to consider is a perch stairlift. When using a perch stairlift, you partially stand but with a seat to perch on. Although, it's likely not suitable if you find partially standing difficult. It's a great option if you have constricted hip or knee joints that make sitting challenging.

Heavy Duty Chairlifts

Whilst most stairlifts' maximum weight limit tops out at 25 stone - there are a couple of options for those living in a larger body.

The highest weight capacity currently available for straight stairs is the Handicare 1000 XXL, which can carry up to 31 stones. For curved staircases, some models have a weight capacity of up to 25 stone, such as the Platinum Ultimate. The highest weight capacity currently available for a curved staircase is the Bruno Elite, which can carry up to 30 stones.

If you are at the top end of these maximum weight limits, a Through-Floor-Lift (TFL) is your only option. When the lift is parked on the ground floor, the top is designed to be strong enough to become part of the floor above.

Through-Floor-Lifts are significantly more expensive, starting at £11,500, but can be a life-changing purchase.

Reconditioned chair lifts Rushmere

If cost is a concern, consider inquiring about approved-used stairlifts as a budget-friendly option. Acquiring a pre-used stairlift for a straight staircase is a straightforward process. Shortening an existing straight stairlift rail to fit your stairs is generally straightforward. Pre-used curved stairlift rails are not easy to re-fit as they've most likely been custom-made for a specific home. One possible approach is to get a new bespoke curved rail then use a 2nd hand curved stairlift carriage.

Getting a stairlift from a friend in the Rushmere area might seem like a cheap option, but rarely ever is. If you want to buy a used chair lift it's a much more sensible idea to buy one from a reputable installer. This way, you can be assured that your stairlift works as well as a new one, installed correctly and is safe.

Reconditioned stairlifts should also come with a one-year guarantee, meaning you're covered for up to a year should anything go wrong.
